The history of the bells goes back to 2000 B.C., and the first time these were rung in the region of China. At that time Chinese used these bells to alert people of any impending danger, remind them of worship, and make important announcements. This culture of bells was also adopted by other countries like Thailand, Japan, and India for the religious practices of Buddhism and Hinduism.
These (cow) Bells are a series of copper bells strung vertically. The sound is produced by hitting the Bells with a wooden stick. Crafts emerged because of the need of the time and regional requirements; the same happened with the craft of copper bells. Earlier in the Indian region, a constant movement of people was present, and livestock was a major occupation. The Lohar community of Sindh saw the potential for making copper bells and brought their craft to the Kachchh.
Cowbells are used as a musical instrument to make fine and appealing music for religious and other purposes. The metal used in these bells is typically waste iron and tin; this artistic industry is a first-class example of recycling with aesthetics and usefulness.
The bells in this instrument are used in different sizes that range from 0-13, with size 0 being the smallest and size 13 being the largest. Each bell with a different side produces a different Kind of sound, and the player uses his skills to make music through these different sounds. Natural resources used for copper bell making are mud, wood, and water.
Many types of bells available are used as musical instruments. Bells are mostly used in religious temples and ancient Indian folk music. Tubular bells are another modern variation of the same instrument. Though the music produced by both instruments is very different, their features are almost the same. These vertically stringed series of copper bells produce a sound that resembles the sound of church bells or a bell tower. This sound seems very enchanting and soothing for the soul in the morning.
